Are You Eating the Right Foods for Your Eyes?

You’ve probably heard that carrots and other orange-colored fruits and vegetables are good for your eyes. This is because carrots are high in beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A that gives them their orange hue and helps the retina and other parts of the eye to run smoothly. Carrots aren’t the only foods that can promote eye health though, and beta-carotene isn’t the only vitamin that your eyes need. Here are a few other foods that you should include in your diet for healthy eyes.

  • Eggs – Despite the popular myth that yolks are bad for you, they actually contain a lot of nutrients that are beneficial, some of these being lutein and zeaxanthin (antioxidants), as well as zinc, all of which lower your risk for macular degeneration.

  • Leafy Greens – The antioxidants above are good for your eyes because they protect against eye damage from things like sunlight, cigarette smoke, and pollution. Spinach and kale are great examples of greens that would be a great addition to your diet. Collard greens and broccoli will also do the job.

  • Almonds – Vitamin E also helps to slow macular degeneration, and almonds are filled with it. One handful (about an ounce) of almonds provides you with about half your daily dose of vitamin E.

  • Salmon and Other Fatty Fish – Salmon is rich in DHA, a fatty acid found in your retina. Other fish high in DHA are tuna, mackerel, anchovies, and trout. Low levels of DHA have been linked to dry eye syndrome.

  • Citrus and Berries – Like vitamin E, vitamin C has been shown to reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration, and citrus fruits and berries are full of this vitamin. Vitamin C can also lower your risk of developing cataracts.

By incorporating these other nutrient and vitamin-rich foods into your diet, you can maintain healthy eyes for years!
