Managing Glaucoma

So, you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma and are wondering what you can do to manage your condition? It is estimated that over 67,000,000 people suffer from glaucoma around the world, with only a fraction of those people being aware of it. The great news is that routine appointments and treatment can help with managing your glaucoma.

One of the most important parts of managing glaucoma is maintaining regular appointments. Most types of glaucoma have very few symptoms until the disease has advanced, making it hard to know exactly how your glaucoma is doing without monitoring from a trained professional.

Glaucoma Treatment in Calgary

At Blink Eyewear we offer various forms of treatment for glaucoma, depending on how advanced your glaucoma is. These treatment options may include:

  • Medication – Treatment will usually begin with medicated eye drops, these glaucoma eye drops help your eye’s fluid drain and also decrease the amount of fluid made by the eye. This reduces the pressure in your eye(s). Most of the medications used to treat glaucoma don’t cause any issues.
  • Laser Iridotomy – This treatment method uses laser technology to create a hole on the outer rim of the iris. Creating an opening will allow fluid to flow from the anterior chamber to the posterior chamber.
  • Laser Trabeculoplasty – For this treatment, a very focused beam of light is used to treat the eye’s drainage angle, making fluid easier to flow, decreasing eye pressure.
  • Conventional Surgery – If medication or laser treatment is not effective in treating your glaucoma, conventional surgery may be necessary. A bypass drain will be created for your eye. Allowing fluid to drain easier, also decreasing the pressure in your eye.

Along with in-office treatments and medication, making better lifestyle choices can also help in your glaucoma treatment. Eat healthier foods, take more walks and try to reduce stress. Make sure you stick to your treatment plan and schedule regular visits with your doctor.
