5 Most Common Eye Tests Used at our Calgary Vision Centre

You use your vision for nearly every activity you do, from reading and watching TV, to driving and cooking meals. Because your eyesight plays such an important role in your daily life, you must do everything you can to protect your eye health.

The best way to do this is to visit your Calgary optician for regular eye exams. During this appointment, you can expect to undergo several basic tests, including:

  1. Visual Acuity Test. Using one eye at a time, you’ll read letters from a chart that is placed a specific distance away from you. Your optician will use your answers to determine how each eye’s vision level compares to the standard 20/20 vision.

  2. Retinoscopy. A retinoscopy allows your optician to best approximate your optimal lens prescription. By examining the reflection of light off your retina, your optometrist can determine if you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism.

  3. Refraction test. This is a test optometrist's use to measure your refractive error. The test will tell your optician what prescription you need in order to have normal 20/20 vision.

  4. Slit lamp examination. A slit lamp is a biomicroscope that your eye doctor uses to carefully examine the structures of your eye under high magnification. A wide range of conditions can be detected with a slit lamp exam, including macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and more.

  5. Intraocular pressure measurement. By sending a quick puff of air into your eyes, an intraocular pressure test measures the force or pressure caused by the fluid in your eyes. An abnormal level of eye pressure can be a warning sign of a serious eye condition called glaucoma.

3 Eye Conditions That Can Only Be Diagnosed By Your Optometrist

The danger with most eye conditions is that they tend to be asymptomatic in the early stages, and you only notice them when your vision becomes affected. That’s why it’s so important to visit your eye doctor regularly, as he/she will be able to detect conditions such as:

  1. Glaucoma. This is a serious eye condition that leads to the damage of the optic nerve. It is also one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada. By using a slit lamp, your optometrist can measure the pressure of your eye and examine the health of your optic nerve, to determine if you have glaucoma.

  2. Diabetic Retinopathy. This eye condition involves changes to the retinal blood vessels, causing them to bleed or leak fluid, distorting your vision. During a diabetic retinal examination, your eye doctor can examine the structures of your eye and determine if there are any changes to the retina.

  3. Cataract diagnosis and management. Cataracts are most common in senior patients. This eye condition is when your lens becomes progressively ‘clouded’, resulting in impaired vision. Using a slit lamp, your eye doctor will be able to determine the extent of this clouding and provide advice for further treatment.
