Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is an in-office, doctor-supervised type of therapy aimed at retraining the learned aspects of vision taking a more physical approach for the brain and eyes. This is a non-surgical treatment that is highly effective for various eye disorders such as double vision, crossed eyes, lazy eye, insufficiency of convergence, reading, and learning disabilities. This technology has been of great benefit to patients who have been told nothing could be done and to just live with their condition.

While not a cure for learning disabilities, vision therapy is directed specifically towards solving optical problems that interfere with learning, reading, and receiving instruction educationally.

Components of a Vision Therapy Program

  • Conducted under the supervision of eye care professionals
  • An in-office procedure consisting of 30 minutes to 1 hour biweekly sessions
  • Vision exercises and procedures in a step-by-step program
  • Supplementary home procedures are often provided, to be done between visits to the office
  • Procedures are usually prescribed to:
    • Improve the ease, comfort, and efficiency of vision
    • Develop and improve fundamental vision abilities
    • Modify how patients interpret and process visual information

Not Just Vision Exercises

Vision therapy does not focus on strengthening eye muscles, unlike other exercise-based treatments - patients’ eye muscles already have incredible strength. Contrary to how it's been marketed, vision therapy is not simply a self-help eye exercise program. Vision therapy is supervised in-office by Blink Eyewear's experienced optometrists and staff members using different medical tools and specialized equipment in the optometric vision therapy process.

Some of these are:

  • Optical filters
  • Prismatic lens (regulated)
  • Therapy lens (regulated)
  • Corrective lens (regulated)
  • Eye-patch or occluder
  • Balance board (vestibular)
  • Electronic target, including timing machine
  • Visual-motor-sensory integration training equipment
  • Computer software

To begin the process of vision therapy, the first step is to get a comprehensive vision exam. After evaluation, you will be advised by one of our qualified optometrists in Calgary whether vision therapy is appropriate for you.
