5 Benefits of Yearly Eye Exams For Seniors

As you age, you are more vulnerable to certain changes that can weaken your vision and compromise your eye health. Here’s why it’s so important for seniors to schedule regular eye exams with their SW Calgary optometrist.

Older adults often underestimate the importance of having an annual eye exam. If your prescription on your eyeglasses seems to be working well, you might not want to incur the expense of what seems like an unnecessary visit to your SW Calgary optometrist.

However, it’s important to know that a yearly eye exam with your optometrist includes more than just a vision test. It also gives your eye doctor the chance to uncover significant health problems before they become serious, such as:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol

Importance of Yearly Eye Exams For Seniors

Many seniors understand just how important it is to see their doctor at least once a year for a checkup. It’s the best way to identify small health problems before they develop into bigger ones that are harder to treat.

What few seniors are aware of is just how important an annual eye exam with their optometrist is. Because the risk of eye problems increases as you age, older adults must make their eye health a priority.

A yearly senior eye exam can help detect conditions common amongst older adults, such as:

1. Cataracts. This is a clouding of the eye’s lens and as it develops, it can hinder your vision, lower your quality of life, and make performing day-to-day activities difficult. This can often be corrected with cataract surgery.

2. Macular Degeneration: This age-related vision problem affects the light-sensitive tissue in the eye. When left untreated, it can even lead to vision loss and blindness, which is why prompt diagnosis and management is key.

3. Diabetic Retinopathy: This is a vision condition related to diabetes and it can cause damage to the blood vessels in the back of the eye. Prompt treatment is necessary because diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of vision loss in adults.

4. Retinal Tearing: Seniors are also at a higher risk for small tears in the inner lining of the eye. This can lead to dangerous retinal detachments or other conditions, which could impact your vision and result in floaters or black spots.

5. Glaucoma. Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. It can lead to serious vision loss and because it shows no early symptoms, fast intervention is key to preventing blindness.
