LASIK EYE SURGERY MANAGEMENT IN CALGARY

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

Before undergoing laser eye surgery, it’s important to book a consultation with your Calgary optometrist to determine whether or not this is a suitable procedure for you. During this consultation, your eye doctor will educate you on the risks and benefits of the procedure, and what factors might affect your candidacy.

Typically, good candidates for LASIK eye surgery meet the following criteria:

  1. Age: To be eligible for LASIK eye surgery, patients must be at least 18 years of age. This is because, before this age, you are still growing and your eyesight is still changing, which means the surgery will not be as effective.
  2. No eye diseases. Some eye conditions may prohibit you from being a candidate for LASIK eye surgery. Having conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts could make it difficult, or even dangerous, to have this procedure.
  3. Good general health. Your overall health can have an impact on candidacy for LASIK eye surgery. If you have diabetes or certain autoimmune diseases, you may not be a good candidate for this procedure. Your eye doctor can walk you through your options and determine whether any pre-existing health conditions will impact your ability to have this surgery.
  4. Stable prescription. Even if you are over the age of 18 years old, your prescription may still be changing. If you want the results of your laser eye surgery to be as effective as possible, then you must have a stable prescription for at least 1-2 years.
  5. You don’t have dry eyes. Recovery from laser eye surgery could prove to be difficult if you have dry eye syndrome, although this doesn’t prevent you from having the surgery. If you are prone to dry eyes, your eye doctor could recommend ways to treat it and get your symptoms under control before your laser eye surgery.
  6. Corneal thickness. One of the most important factors for LASIK candidacy is the thickness of your cornea. If your cornea isn’t thick enough, your surgeon can’t safely make a corneal flap. Due to the nature of the procedure, candidates must have a corneal thickness of approximately 0.5mm.
