If you do suffer from dry eyes, the best course of action is to discuss your condition with your Calgary optometrist. They are in the best position to suggest the appropriate course of treatment. In the meantime, there are several lifestyle changes you can make to ease your symptoms.
This includes:
1. Taking frequent computer breaks. If your job requires you to spend a lot of time on the computer, then you are likely to suffer from dry eyes. You must remember to take frequent breaks from your screen, and to blink more frequently, as this will help keep your eyes moist.
2. Reconsider the type of contact lenses you use. Over the years, contact lens materials have improved. Even so, the lack of oxygen can exacerbate your dry eye symptoms. Why not give your eyes a break by wearing your eyeglasses more, or by switching to daily disposable contact lenses?

3. Stop smoking. Cigarette smoke contains multiple chemicals which can irritate your eyes, which is why research has shown that smokers have approximately double the risk of developing dry eyes. Smoking can also change the composition of your tears, which causes more dry eye symptoms.
4. Drink more water. Drinking more water will lubricate your eyes and allow them to better produce tears and focus. Without proper hydration, your eyes can’t clear out debris, blink comfortably, or even see without straining. Try to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day.
5. Make changes to your environment. In some cases, low humidity, dust, air conditioning, or heat can cause temporary eye dryness. If you think that this is exacerbating your condition, consider using a cool-mist humidifier, avoid dry or blowing air, or keep your windows closed at home or while driving.
6. Drink less alcohol. It’s no secret that too much alcohol consumption can be dehydrating, which could be affecting your eyes. Why not try to limit your alcohol intake, or eliminate it temporarily, to see whether it’s contributing to your condition.
DIY remedies might take care of mild and temporary instances of dry eye. However, if your symptoms persist, then it might be time to visit your Calgary optometrist. They can advise on the next course of treatment to ensure your vision stays clear and comfortable.
