Looking after your overall health, including the health of your eyes, during the COVID-19 pandemic is more important than ever. While our Creekside optometrists are offering eye emergency care for kids and adults, here are some steps you can take at home to protect your family’s vision.

EMERGENCY EYE CARE FROM OUR CALGARY EYE DOCTORS DURING COVID-19
Protecting your eyesight is one of the most important things you can do to help maintain your quality of life. During this time of COVID-19, it’s more critical than ever to practice good eye health habits to protect your family’s vision.
Here are some steps you can take:
Activities that get the heart rate up can also boost blood flow, which is excellent for your eyes. Go for a walk or spend at least 30 minutes outside in your garden with your children, opting for family-friendly activities such as football, trampoline jumping, and more.
Whether you are encouraging your child to do a DIY project or participate in active sports during social distancing, make sure to ALWAYS wear safety eyewear. Remember, sports-related eye injuries and emergencies can cause permanent vision loss, but can also be prevented with the right safety eyewear.
Many eye diseases run in families and they can affect your children, such as myopia. By knowing and fully understanding your family’s eye history, you are more likely to detect any vision problems in your kids and yourself early on.
Protecting your overall health can go a long way to keeping your eyes healthy! It’s important to make healthy eating and lifestyle choices, as this can go a long way in lowering your risk of diseases and conditions that can lead to vision problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
ALWAYS wash your hands before you put your lenses in or take them out. Also make sure to disinfect your contact lenses and replace them regularly.
Be sure to have plenty of dark, leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, and collard greens. Eating fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids — such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, is good for your eye health too.
While our eye clinics are closed during this time, our Creekside location is open for emergency eye care by appointment only. Our eye doctors are also offering telehealth services, and are happy to have a video or phone consultation with you regarding any questions or concerns you may have.
If you have an eye emergency, please email creek@blinkeyewear.ca, or call us at 403-516-2292 and we will get back to you as soon as possible. After a phone or video consultation, we will come up with a treatment plan.
