How to Fix Broken Eyeglasses At Home During COVID-19: Top Tips From Our Calgary Eye Doctors

For anyone who wears eyeglasses, you know just how inconvenient and frustrating it can be when you accidentally break your frame. Depending on the severity of damage, there are some ways you can salvage your eyeglasses.

Here are some possible scenarios and how to approach fixing your broken eyeglasses:

The Frame Around the Lens Has Broken

It is not uncommon for the frame around your lens to break, especially at the bridge. Unfortunately, if your frames are metal, you cannot fix them at home. Why? Metal frames require welding, which is why you can only get them fixed at a well-equipped eye clinic.

However, if you have plastic frames, you may have a little more leeway when it comes to home-based solutions, and you may be able to temporarily fix them using bonding glue.

Here’s how:

  1. Clean the damaged areas to ensure that no dust or particles are present.
  2. Cover your lens with wax paper to avoid spilling glue on them.
  3. Apply bonding glue to the two pieces that are to be glued together.
  4. Hold the pieces together for at least 60 seconds.
  5. Let the glasses sit for 15-20 minutes.

Tip: Be careful when using bonding glue to fix your frames. It can be very difficult to remove any glue that accidentally gets on your lens. If in doubt, give our Calgary eye doctors a call.

The Arm Has Broken

Over time, you may find that the arm of your eyeglasses breaks off, and this is generally due to wear and tear and is caused by the hinge screw falling out. There are two ways you can fix this:

  1. Use an eyeglass repair kit. If you have an eyeglass repair kit, you’re in luck! These kits come with spare screws, a screwdriver, nose pads, and a magnifier. So simply replace your lost screw with a screw from the kit.
  1. Use a toothpick: While this should not be your first option, in some cases, you can use a toothpick to temporarily hold the arm in place instead of a screw. Simply place the toothpick where the screw should go and then trim off any excess toothpick.

Tip: Always contact your Calgary eye doctor first before trying any at home methods to fix your glasses. Such a professional can provide you with the right advice to make sure you don’t do any further damage to your frame.

The Nose Pad is Broken

Fixing a broken nose pad is quite straightforward. Simply use a nose pad screwdriver from your eyeglass repair kit to loosen the screw holding the nose pad to your glasses, remove the nose pad, and replace it with a new one.

Don’t have an eyeglass repair kit? You may be able to pick up nose pads from your eye clinic. Call us today and we can recommend the best way forward.

When Your Eyeglasses Can’t Be Fixed

Unfortunately, there may be a time when your eyeglasses are so damaged that they are beyond repair. For example, if your plastic frame is broken in multiple areas, no amount of glue can hold them in place and you may need to buy a new pair.

Likewise, if your lenses are cracked or shattered, there is no way to salvage them. Cracked lenses will not only limit your vision, but they can also cause harm to your eyes.
