How to Get Used to Your Progressive Lenses

Have you just started wearing progressive lenses? Here’s what you need to know about the adjustment period and some tips to get used to your new lenses quickly.

Progressive lenses have three prescriptions in one pair of eyeglasses. This allows you to do distance work (eg. working on a computer), distance viewing (driving a car), or close up work (eg. reading) without needing to change your glasses. They are sometimes called multifocal lenses and have many benefits, including:

  • Better viewing
  • Lower costs because you only need one pair of eyeglasses
  • Greater convenience
  • No visible line on the lens

As you get older, it’s only natural for your vision to change. While some people experience such changes more than others, some vision changes are inevitable. That’s why so many Canadians over the age of 40 opt for progressive lenses. Not only do they adapt to your lifestyle, but they also allow you a no-fuss option that will help you see clearly in many different settings.

Top Tips For The Progressive Lenses Adjustment Period

Progressive lenses are an innovative product in the eyewear industry and they allow patients to see far away, mid, and close up, all through one lineless lens. However, since you will see differently through the top, middle, and bottom of the lens, it can take some time to get used to.

Here are 4 simple tips to help you adjust to your new progressive lenses:

1. Keep Them On

You may be tempted to switch back and forth between your progressive lenses and your old eyeglasses if the new ones are uncomfortable, but don’t! The more you wear your progressive lenses, the quicker you’ll get used to them.

With progressive lenses, a gradual approach DOES NOT work. It’s all about practice makes perfect.

2. Move Your Whole Head

Constantly moving your eyes from one part of the lens to the other will only cause eye strain, which can lead to headaches and eye discomfort. In addition, you won’t be able to see through the correct prescription.

Try to get into the habit of moving your whole head, especially when looking through the far and mid-range prescriptions. You will have to move your eyes down when you want to access your reading prescription.

3. Make Sure to Place Your Eyeglasses Correctly

As is the case with any pair of glasses, proper positioning can make a huge difference in how comfortable they are, and how well you can see, especially when you first start wearing them. Be sure to:

  • Keep your glasses positioned high up on the bridge of your nose
  • Keep them close to your eyes to increase visibility
  • Visit your optometrist if your eyeglasses feel loose or ill-fitting

If you have any issues with the prescription of your lens, visit your optometrist and he/she can help do the necessary adjustments to ensure your vision stays clear.

4. Be Patient

If you are diligent and stick with your new glasses, you’ll train your brain to see properly through them and looking through the different areas of the lens will become easy and natural. While it may take 1-2 weeks, adjusting to progressive lenses is relatively simple and you’ll no longer have to switch back and forth between multiple eyeglasses.
