Top Eye Problems Seniors Must Watch Out For

Aging can bring up certain changes that weaken your vision and eye health. Here are some of the most common age related eye problems and why regular senior eye exams are so important.

Regular eye exams for seniors are very important because not only are older patients more prone to developing certain eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, but a visit to your optometrist can uncover significant health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

The good news? There are certain things that you can do to maintain lifelong eye and overall health, including:

  • Visiting your optometrist every 1-2 years. Having a complete eye exam with an optometrist is critical because many eye diseases can be treated when caught early.
  • Seeing your family physician regularly to check for diseases that may increase your risk of eye problems, such as diabetes.
  • Having a dilated eye exam at least once a year, especially if you have a family history of eye disease, such as glaucoma.
  • Visiting your eye doctor immediately when you have changes in your vision such as loss of eyesight, blurred vision, or eye pain.

Common Age-Related Eye Problems

There are certain eye problems that become more common as you age. Here’s what signs to watch out for and some simple measures you can take to ease your discomfort and see better:

Presbyopia

This is the loss of ability to see close objects or small print. The development of presbyopia is a normal process that happens over a lifetime and most patients don’t see changes in their vision until after age 40. You may notice that you need to hold reading material at arm’s length, or that you eyes feel tired when doing close work.

How to Treat Presbyopia: This eye problem can be corrected with reading glasses.

Floaters

Floaters are tiny spots that float across the field of vision. While they’re often normal, they can be a sign of serious eye problems such as a retinal detachment when accompanied by light flashes.

How to Treat Floaters: If you notice a sudden change in the number of floaters, or you see flashes of light, you should visit your optometrist immediately.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a gradual clouding of the eye lens, which causes blurry and altered vision. They typically form slowly and if they become large and thick, they can have a significant impact on your vision.

How to Treat Cataracts: They are removed with surgery, during which the doctor removes the clouded lens and replaces it with a clear one.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is caused by an increased pressure inside the eye and if not treated early, it can lead to permanent vision loss. Heredity is a significant risk factor for this eye disease, as is age, diabetes, and race. If you have these risk factors, you must visit your eye doctor regularly because glaucoma has no early symptoms.

How to Treat Glaucoma: Treatment may include prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser treatment, or surgery.
