Transition Lenses And How To Take Care Of Them

Managing multiple pairs of eyeglasses and switching between them as the occasion demands can be difficult. Carrying both standard eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses when you go out can be annoying. Would it not be great if prescription glasses could change their tint depending on the light they detect?

Transition or photochromic lenses do just that. When the sun is out, they darken and act as prescription sunglasses that block 100% of dangerous ultraviolet rays. When indoor, the lenses become clearer, granting you the same vision as your favourite corrective eyeglasses. No matter where you are or what you are doing, transition lenses will always adopt the tint that gives you the best vision.
Such special eyewear needs special care, though. Transition lenses that are not gently cleaned on a daily basis can lose their effectiveness within 3 years.

At Blink Eyewear, we carry a wide selection of transition lenses of all shapes, styles, and colours. Regardless of your lifestyle, we have the right transition lenses for you. Start your shopping process with an eye exam by calling  403-516-2292 or by filling out the online contact form

Taking Care Of Your Transition Lenses

To maximize your transition lenses’ lifespan, follow these directives:

  1. Clean your transition lenses every day: You will be most likely wearing your transition lenses at all times. Dirt and dust will inevitably accumulate on the lenses, which can obstruct your vision and turn into stains. Stained glasses can be difficult to clean.
  2. Rinse your transition lenses into lukewarm water: Simply wiping your glasses with a dry cloth is not sufficient when cleaning your transition lenses. In fact, the wiping movement can spread dust and dirt particles and leave micro-scratches on the lenses’ surface. Instead, rinse your transition lenses into lukewarm water and gently shake off the droplets left on the lenses. You should also avoid using household chemicals to clean your transition lenses. These products often contain ammonia, which can damage the coating of your lenses.
  3. Gently use an optical cloth on your lenses: Softly dab your transition lenses with a microfibre optical cloth. This should remove most dirt particles and stains on the lenses. Paper towels, tissues, and napkins are not suitable substitutes for an optical cloth. Their textured surface can leave scratches on your lenses.
  4. Optional – apply dishwashing liquid: If stains remain, you can apply a drop of dishwashing liquid on your lenses. Wet your lenses and manually spread the soap around to eliminate the remaining stains. Dry your lenses with a microfibre optical cloth again.

Cleaning your transition lenses the right way is important. Improper care will make your lenses wear out faster. Your lenses may take more time to change their tint. A yellowish hue may begin to seep in at the edges of your lenses.

While these cleaning instructions seem burdensome on paper, the whole process should take less than 2 minutes to complete. Cleaning will quickly become routine, and as easy as brushing your teeth or tying your shoes.

Getting The Best Of Both Worlds With Your Transition Lenses

Transition lenses let you have your cake and eat it too. They let you see as well as with prescription eyeglasses and offer the UV protection of a premium pair of sunglasses when you need it. Best of all, they change their tint accordingly so that you do not have to carry glasses for every occasion.

Cleaning your transition glasses regularly ensures that you enjoy these benefits for years to come. Blink Eyewear can help you explore your transition lens options. Call 403-516-2292 or fill out the online contact form to get started.

FAQs

Q: Can transition lenses be polarized?
A: While possible, most transition lenses are not polarized.

Q: Are transition lenses more expensive?
A: Yes. Transition lenses are usually more expensive than standard corrective glasses and prescription sunglasses. But one pair does the job of two.

Q: What are the disadvantages?
A: Transition lenses won't work as well in cars. The windshield blocks most of the UV rays, so the lenses will not darken as much as they should.
