6 Simple Steps to Protect Your Family’s Vision While at Home

Looking after your overall health, including the health of your eyes, during the COVID-19 pandemic is more important than ever. While our Creekside optometrists are offering eye emergency care for kids and adults, here are some steps you can take at home to protect your family’s vision.

Your eyes are an important part of your health. You rely on them to see and make sense of the world around you. However, there are certain eye diseases that can lead to permanent vision loss, so it’s important to take care of your eyes and protect your vision. Following a healthy diet and quitting unhealthy habits such as smoking, can boost your eye health and lower your risk of developing certain eye conditions, including:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic Retinopathy

How to Protect Your Family’s Vision During COVID-19

Protecting your eyesight is one of the most important things you can do to help maintain your quality of life. During this time of COVID-19, it’s more critical than ever to practice good eye health habits to protect your family’s vision.

Here are some steps you can take:

1. Stay physically active

Activities that get the heart rate up can also boost blood flow, which is excellent for your eyes. Go for a walk or spend at least 30 minutes outside in your garden with your children, opting for family-friendly activities such as football, trampoline jumping, and more.

2. Wear safety eyewear

Whether you are encouraging your child to do a DIY project or participate in active sports during social distancing, make sure to ALWAYS wear safety eyewear. Remember, sports-related eye injuries and emergencies can cause permanent vision loss, but can also be prevented with the right safety eyewear.

3. Know your family eye history

Many eye diseases run in families and they can affect your children, such as myopia. By knowing and fully understanding your family’s eye history, you are more likely to detect any vision problems in your kids and yourself early on.

4. Take care of your family’s overall health

Protecting your overall health can go a long way to keeping your eyes healthy! It’s important to make healthy eating and lifestyle choices, as this can go a long way in lowering your risk of diseases and conditions that can lead to vision problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

5. If you wear contact lenses, take the appropriate steps to prevent eye infections

ALWAYS wash your hands before you put your lenses in or take them out. Also make sure to disinfect your contact lenses and replace them regularly.

6. Eat healthy foods

Be sure to have plenty of dark, leafy greens, such as spinach, kale, and collard greens. Eating fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids — such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, is good for your eye health too.
